Let’s Talk About Malignant Narcissism

Since you’re okay with Trump leading the nation.

I live on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, which is a pocket of red in a blue state, so I drive by two types of Trump signs: either giant ones placed on a farm or commercial land by wealthy people, or personal ones, often on lower-income properties. Why don’t we see as many Harris signs here? Often because reasonable, intelligent and many times middle-class, hard-working individuals already know who they’re voting for and don’t feel a need to advertise it, or in my case because the signs would be stolen by feral Trumpers.

There’s a very narrow substrata of Trump voters who confuse me: people who are otherwise intelligent. Especially women. I don’t understand how you, as someone in a party who allegedly wants (or used to want) “freedom” amd “less government” you’re okay with women completely losing bodily autonomy and reproductive rights. Also, curious: how as a woman do you rationalize a vote for someone convicted of sexual assault with over 25 accusations of sexual misconduct by women?

How can any smart citizen, beyond issues people prioritize like the economy or immigration (even though the economy was not worse under Biden and Trump voted against a bipartisan immigration bill) vote for someone with the obvious mental health issues Trump has?

It’s not difficult to break this down. Psychologists have debated the mental health and signs of malignant narcissism of Trump. His former staffer Jenna Ellis stated:

“I simply can’t support him for elected office again,” Ellis said. “Why I have chosen to distance is because of that frankly malignant narcissistic tendency to simply say that he’s never done anything wrong.”

What are the symptoms of malignant narcissism? Take a look:

• Preoccupied with fantasies about beauty, brilliance, success, and power.
• Unable to handle criticism.
• Tendency to lash out if they feel slighted.
• Likely to take advantage of others to get what they want.
• Overly concerned about their appearance.
• Expect to be treated as superior and craves this validation, also known as narcissistic supply.
• Lack of empathy for others.
• Inflated sense of self and inability to self-regulate.
• Have no remorse for hurting others and no interest in apologizing unless it benefits them.
• Have an attitude of deserving the best of everything.
• Tendency to monopolize conversations and/or mistreat those who they perceive as inferior.
• Hidden insecurity and a weak sense of self.
• Tendency to blame others for their own bad behavior.

Any of those ring any bells if you follow the behavior of the former president? And you’re ok with this being your guy as a world leader? Social psychologist Erich Fromm, who first coined the term malignant narcissism, called people with this type "the quintessence of evil."

People with this subtype contain the general traits of NPD, including regular egocentricity. They also have antisocial traits and even a sadistic streak, as well as a poor sense of self and lack of empathy. There’s often some paranoia involved with malignant narcissism as well.

John Gartner, Ph.D., is a psychologist who taught at Johns Hopkins University Medical School for 28 years. He says yes, the president has malignant narcissism, as follows in his chapter in the book Rocket Man: Nuclear Madness and the Mind of Donald Trump (2018):

“Trump suffers from malignant narcissism, a diagnosis [that is] far more toxic and dangerous than mere narcissistic personality disorder because it combines narcissism with three other severely pathological components: paranoia, sociopathy, and sadism. When combined, this perfect storm of psychopathology defines the ‘quintessence of evil,’ according to Fromm, the closest thing psychiatry has to describing a true human monster.”

There’s a documentary dedicated to Trump’s psychological diagnosis as the sole reason why he’s not capable of leading a nation. “Unfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump" interviews several psychologists who argue they have a medical duty to warn the US public about Trump's alleged mental state.

So I see the signs in the yards and on the side of the road, but don’t understand how nearly half our country thinks it’s ok to vote for the severely mentally unstable person whose name is on them.

Discussion
  • Trump wasn't "convicted" of sexual assault. The link you provided proves that. This is false reporting.

  • Harold is correct, Mary. Trump wasn't convicted of sexual assault. He was convicted of sexual abuse. Most of us would rather have a "sexual abuser" as president than a "sexual assaulter." Your false reporting is nothing but left-wing Trumpaganda.

  • I'm sorry, but civil courts don't hand down "convictions." Back to the wood cutting for you, sir.

  • I apologize for the error. Based on this reporting:https://www.newsweek.com/fact-check-was-donald-trump-found-guilty-rape-1799935 "The jury found by a preponderance of the evidence that Mr. Trump sexually abused Ms. Carroll and therefore was liable for battery." My error was not intentional or "left wing Trumpaganda" but the fact that you men have jumped so quickly to the defense of a man who has been accused of sexual abuse by at least 26 women unfortunately says less about my political views and more about your misogyny.

  • How clueless can you be not to see that other "man," "woodcutter," was coming to your defense? You're so eager to make this a man thing that you see nothing else? Or maybe you just couldn't figure out the meaning of what he said. You have now provided a different link than the one in your article, which makes no sense, but where in the sentence you quoted does it say he was "convicted" of anything? "Liable" does not mean "convicted." I think you need some help. When you see "preponderance of evidence," that tells you no criminal charges were pending, thus no conviction is possible. Are you really not familiar with "beyond a reasonable doubt"? As for your claim that I'm defending Trump by pointing out your error, you embarrass yourself with such a statement. The same goes for blaming your sloppy journalism on my "misogyny." That's pathetic.

  • Oh, and you're a staff member? Wow.

  • I see you don't care enough about reporting accurately to correct your false assertion that Trump was convicted of sexual assault. You wrote here that "my error was not intentional." But at this point, it's intentional misinformation. Saying you're sorry for the mistake, which you did, is meaningless.

    Responses to this comment
  • And you still haven't corrected your misinformation. Yet you claim the moral high ground, which is the worst part of your entire journalistic misconduct.

  • The civil jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse. Does this satisfy your request to correct the record? I know it makes me feel so much better about Mr. Trump and his personal character.

    Responses to this comment
  • Obviously it doesn't satisfy my request, as the record has not been corrected. Pretty sure I already explained that to you.

  • You are an adult who doesn't understand what a legal "conviction" is?

    Responses to this comment
  • Yes, you are correct. Feel better now? Can you give it a rest.

  • Please spare us your Trumpaganda, sexist. Why do you, as a man, defend a "man who has been accused of sexual abuse by 26 women"? Shame on you.

  • I apologize to both of you for misreading the comments in quickly responding to them. Harold I find your insults to me directly unnecessary and quite revealing of your agenda, while woodcutting contacted me directly to clear the misunderstanding. I again apologize for the far more egregious error in the mistaken assumption that he was agreeing with you. I'm not sure why you are so preoccupied with the former president's habitual sexual deviance, but to me your willingness to repeatedly insult me and defend him is absolutely the most telling elephant in the living room of this comments section.

  • My single insult to you was to call you clueless after you insulted me, baselessly, by calling me a misogynist. That’s fair isn’t it? But not in your self-centered world. l see that you have still not corrected your false reporting that Trump was convicted in this case. Obviously, you don’t value accuracy, making you unprofessional, to say the least. You apologize for your mistake, but you can't get over yourself and fix it. I notice that most of your writing is about yourself. Maybe your solopcism blinds you to the real world, and the professional standards you're expected to uphold. When you get off the topic of yourself, which you’re an expert on, your writing is far from expert.Your political analysis, for example, is about at the high school newspaper level.

  • Careful Harold Childish, your misogyny is showing as you continue to defend your patron saint Trump (next time I promise to be more graphic and accurate when I describe how the former president was found by a jury to have defamed, assaulted and yes, the word the judge said is appropriate to use is RAPED) .. and you're terrible at math as you have insulted me far, far more than once and continue to do so.. very odd how you keep going on with it. Fortunately I don't get too broken up by insults from faceless internet trolls, and agree with my colleague Loren Kantor's piece (where you took the time to leave another lengthy accounting.. obsess much?) about the profile of such trolls. I have never purported to be any kind of great writer, though I was editor of both my high school *and* college newspapers. What are your journalism credentials exactly?- oh right, we don't know, because you're an anonymous troll. I have written about hundreds of topics over the years-- the only topic you seem to write about besides insulting me is the defense of a mentally unstable convinced felon on record with over 30k lies, so you're not exactly a beacon of journalistic wisdom.

  • A troll is anyone who disagrees with you, and you are a very self-righteous and sensitive person. Feel free to be graphic in your description of Trump, who I don't like and haven't defended. Feel free to quote my defense of him. I know you can't do it. Feel free to quote my insults to you, although there's only been one, in response to your insult. Having a discussion with you is like talking to a petulant child. You're upset about my correcting your false reporting, which you refuse to correct because your ego is involved. Yet you claim to be an experienced editor? So I assume you didn't correct falsehoods then too. Not the kind of editor people respect, in other words. You can call me all the names in the book if it makes you feel better, but the fact remains that you can't understand that there are no convictions in civil court. Therefore, you are not qualified to comment on legal matters.
