It’s Kind of Fun That Way

A 2003 Pitchfork interview with musician Kevin Drumm vs. a 2019 New York Public Library interview with historian Robert A. Caro.

Robert A. Caro: You feel, God, people don't understand. They've forgotten what government can do for them or to them.

Kevin Drumm: I know. Seriously, though, it is getting too expensive.

Caro: Well, sure. Yes.

Drumm: Lately things seem to stop working for mysterious reasons.

Caro: Because people have a need to fill the silence.

Drumm: That compelled me, I guess, to take this "unconventional" approach a step further and make some attempt at developing my own language.

Caro: This was a very closely held secret.

Drumm: It never fucked shit up, so to speak.

Caro: Yeah. There is no one truth, you know?

Drumm: Oh, I was just talking about this yesterday.

•••

Caro: And you suddenly realize you haven't passed a house in 30 miles.

Drumm: These things varied, as you can tell.

Caro: Part of it was fooling people.

Drumm: It’s kind of fun that way.

Caro: Great question. [Laughter]
