It’s a Habit of Mine

A 2014 The Aquarian interview with musician Van Dyke Parks vs. a 2025 The Believer interview with actor Delroy Lindo.

Delroy Lindo: There was a scene that was cut out of the film, but it was really important to me.

Van Dyke Parks: It was foolish to expect an audience to put it all together.

Lindo: On some level we’re everything and everywhere. Does that make sense?

Parks: I’m just not so happy about the corporate reality we live in.

Lindo: Absolutely, because there are always those who are trying to constrain, restrain, suppress.

Parks: You just cannot do anything of any merit if you constantly hang your hopes on what people will think of you.

Lindo: No question. I’m not sure what I would do differently.

Parks: (laughs) Warner Music Group belongs to some Russian billionaire now.

Lindo: I’m not quite sure why you’re saying that.

Parks: It’s a habit of mine. I don’t know.

Lindo: All of the above.

Parks: Yet artists rebel against that idea.

Lindo: When we were all rocking to the music, we’re reacting and responding—the synapses were just firing off, man.

Parks: So many people think back then everything was about the dope. That’s why, I’m sorry to say, I had to turn to the issue of greed.

Lindo: That’s profound, that’s right.
